Craft shop lends kind ear
GEELONG’S Red Cross Craft Shop is more than a money spinner it’s a place for a cuppa and a chat. Yesterday the shop was in full swing, with manager Kathleen Lancaster donating $10,500 to the Red Cross.
The craft store has donated $85,000 to the organisation in the four years since it opened. But Mrs Lancaster said the shop would not have survived without a team of dedicated volunteers.
“People from the hospital wander over and have a little look around so it has become a place for a chat and a cuppa,'’ she said.
“Which is one of the main reasons why we didn’t want to lose it.'’
Mrs Lancaster, who has manned the store three days a week for four years, said the Red Cross was more than worthy of her time.
“We don’t only help here in Australia but all these countries across the world,'’ she said.
“When you see the little Red Cross, you might not have given much but you know that little bit has helped.'’
Red Cross Victorian fundraising co-ordinator Stuart Lowe said the store’s profits were injected back into the Geelong community.
He said the money had been spent on two patient transport vehicles, as well as funding a Breakfast Club.
“We provide a nutritional breakfast for kids who would otherwise not have breakfast. They also learn about healthy breakfast choices,'’ Mr Lowe said. www.geelonginfo.com
