Dorm Room Diversity: The Designer Room

No matter how many colleges we visit, or dorm rooms we end up in after long nights of drinking (er, I mean, dorm rooms we see), the staff of CO-ED has noticed a general theme in dorm room decoration, whether we’re at a big or small school: the décor always falls into one of eight categories (four each, for guys and girls). Yes, Jake, you may think that the combination of a hookah and a wall tapestry makes you look unique, but it doesn’t; some other hash-loving hippie in Idaho is smoking in the very same atmosphere.

Decorative planter made of cast iron

Botou Yaqi Casting Co. Ltd has released flowerpot and planter model 61033, a decorative item made of cast iron. It can be used in homes and gardens

The model’s cup-shaped upper part doubles as a flowerpot. It is set on a cuboidal base.

Harder to afford home loans

PEOPLE are finding it harder to afford home loans, with higher interest rates taking their toll on first home-buyers in particular, a new report shows.

A home loan affordability report by loan deposit guarantee provider Deposit Power in conjunction with the Real Estate Institute of Australia (REIA) found home loan affordability worsened in every state and territory in the June quarter, with the exception of Tasmania where it was unchanged.

REIA president Tony Brasier said the results for the three months to June had hit first home buyers, who were expected to have struggled further following the August rate rise. Read more…

A Playroom, Complete With Furnishings

MY relationship with Conran’s dates back 20 years. I, a newlywed and graduate student, moved into a one-bedroom on East 95th Street. My husband and I furnished our nest with the store’s good-looking, fairly sturdy, affordable designs made of modern materials like blond wood, melamine and industrial steel.

My favorite purchase was a free-standing black grid-like wooden bookcase with open shelves (it came with a matching rectangular clock). It was the centerpiece of our living room. Read more…

Rearranging furniture can help homes sell more quickly

With so many homes on the market in Tucson, many are wondering what it will take to sell.

There is a new business in town called “Staged to Sell”.

The idea is to work with possessions people already have to make homes look as livable to a potential buyer as possible.

Another furniture company halts production

Hekman Furniture is stopping production in Grand Rapids, and 60 people are out of a job.

In a statement, the company said it’s been a difficult decision. “This transition is dictated, among other reasons, by continued global competition and domestic excess capacity within the residential furniture industry and is not a reflection on the dedicated work force in Grand Rapids.”

Hekman’s main office will remain in Grand Rapids. They are working with federal and state agencies for job training and other benefits for all their affected workers. Read more…

Shoppers Look Online for Furniture, Appliances Purchases

In its latest Consumer Behavior Report, PriceGrabber.com, an Experian company, found that consumers are migrating online to shop for furniture, appliances and home furnishings, both to research and buy large and small-ticket items. The report tracks shopping trends from its comparison shopping site along with data from a survey of 1,417 online shoppers. Market Reporter, PriceGrabber.com’s market research database, shows a 92 percent increase in merchant referrals over the past six months to retailers in the furniture category, and a 50 percent increase in merchant referrals for major appliances. Although furniture traditionally is a look-and-feel purchase, consumers now are willing to purchase items such as sofas, patio furniture and tables online in addition to retail store purchases. It appears shoppers are doing more homework before shopping, researching online for sales, lower tax rates and free shipping. Read more…
