Flea market plans for old Rewa Bridge

The Nausori Town Council has submitted a proposal to the Government to convert the old Rewa Bridge into a pedestrian mall.

Nausori Mayor Vikash Singh confirmed that initial plans of the Town Council were to convert the old bridge into a walk-thru flea market.

He said the plans were submitted to the Public Works Department.

However, PWD is yet to inform the council of a decision on the future of the old bridge.

Singh said the NTC was optimistic the Government would approve its plans.

“The fate of the old Rewa Bridge lies on the Government as it belongs to them and they have full authority as to what shall be done with it.

“The Town Council has sent a proposal to PWD to convert it into a pedestrian mall with flea markets of handicraft stalls.

“This will certainly support the infrastructure for opportunities in Nausori for tourism industry but it all depends on Government as they will need to continue maintenance on the old bridge as it can be a risk to the new Rewa Bridge and safety issues may be raised during a large flood,” Singh said.

The old bridge was closed on Thursday afternoon making way for the new four-lane Rewa Bridge.
