Holidaymakers swarm fruit garden

The long holiday saw an increase of visitors to the Mekarsari Fruit Garden in Cileungsi, Bogor, Antara reported Tuesday.

The park offered various activities to visitors, including planting and fruit picking, growing plants, fruit variety lessons for children and tours around the 264-hectare garden, along with areas for picnics and sports fields.

Garden spokeswoman Eva Rongre said visitors came from as far away as Bandung, Semarang in Central Java, Surabaya and Malang in East Java, as well as Greater Jakarta.

She added that the fruit garden usually accommodated 1,500 visitors during weekdays and up to 7,500 on weekends or national holidays.

“The number climbed to 20,000 during the last five-day national holiday,” she said.

The management also had to deploy 100 guides, up from 30 on ordinary days, and ran 35 tour carts, an increase from the usual 15.

The central government provided a long holiday for people to celebrate Independence Day on Aug. 17 and the Ascension of Prophet Muhammad on Aug. 21.

The resort also offered special programs for celebrating Independence Day, including a volleyball tournament, cycling, stage performances and a Kuda Lumping performance.
