When Dave Termini was 13 years old, he would sweep his father’s wood shop after school. While swirling sawdust choked the budding craftsman, all he could think of was playing with his friends outside.

As he grew older, he began to realize his hands could make things his mind conceived.

Every good startup tries to practice a little technological jujitsu. By applying a bit of force in just the right place, a handful of people can knock a large and fast-moving industry sector slightly off balance and open up a new and significant opportunity. That’s just what SiCortex Inc. is attempting to do in the hot area of clustered servers for high-performance computing (HPC).

Today, most of the HPC sector is stacking off-the-shelf X86 processors into powerful piles that rival the most muscular custom-built architectures. The sector has adopted a combination of Linux and the message-passing interface (MPI) as its software platform. “We wanted to slide a new hardware architecture under that API that could be three to 10 times better,” said John Goodhue, VP of marketing for the 30-person company. New eco design advisor service at Waitakere

Waitakere is offering a free eco design advice service for people planning to build or renovate their homes.

Eco design advisor Fred Braxton can give impartial advice on sustainable design topics such as energy, water and materials, for home building or renovation projects within the city’s boundaries.

Clients can make an appointment to meet him for up to two hours at their own site, at their designer’s office, or at the council - Waitakere Central, Henderson.

‘Green’ building gains toehold in region

The new $5.7 million Whole Foods Cooperative, at 610 E. 4th St. in Duluth, is the first building in the region and just the third in the state to receive LEED certification, or Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design.

The nonprofit U.S. Green Building Council awards certification to buildings designed for energy efficiency and low environmental impact.

Duluth Mayor Herb Bergson presented a plaque for the certification to the co-op in an Oct. 18 ceremony. Read more…

Sustainable UCSB Building Gains LEED Honors

Long-term efforts to make UCSB “greener” are paying off, as a national environmental group recently commended one more campus building for its unique, eco-friendly design.

The new Marine Science Research Building just received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, a nonprofit organization that aims to promote sustainable building design. The structure, which cost $25 million to construct, was awarded the distinction for innovative design in energy and water efficiency.
