A second phase of the expansion is planned but won’t get under way until funds are approved by the Legislature.

The end is in sight for a major expansion project at the Washington State Penitentiary.

New Construction Code to regulate building boom

Parliament is working on a construction code that will be discussed in the spring legislative session. Lawmakers claim that this new law will lay the groundwork to establish European-standard legislation in the future.

The construction code will unite all the laws regarding building construction and help create guarantees for construction companies’ security.

Selling furniture and fishing were his passions

Leonard Bragg Jr. had only one career in mind when he received his commerce and business administration degree from the University of Alabama in 1953.

He followed his father into the furniture business, joining Leonard Bragg Sr. at the family-owned furniture store that opened in 1942 on Washington Street in downtown Huntsville. He remained there - also working with his younger brother, Joe Ed Bragg - until he retired in 2000.

Lawmaker Moves Into Solar-Powered House

Senator Frank Wagner is staying warm at his temporary address, even in below-freezing weather and without a traditional power supply or fireplace.

The Virginia Beach Republican, a proponent of alternative energy sources, is living for a week outside the Science Museum of Virginia in a solar-powered house designed and built by Virginia Tech students. He moved in Wednesday. Read more…

Awards celebrate best building designs

The best in building design was recognised when the annual Blackpool Civic Trust Awards were made.

From contemporary architecture of Devonshire School to restoration of a historic window at Blackpool Town Hall where the ceremony was held, 10 different accolades were bestowed this year.

They reflected a variety of good practice from projects which had achieved environmental aims, to challenging but sympathetic renovation schemes and ambitious new build developments.

National Architect Group Awards Funding for Architectural Podcasts in San Francisco

-The American Institute of Architects San Francisco Chapter (AIA San Francisco) has been awarded $5,000 of grant funding from The American Institute of Architects (AIA) in Washington, D.C. to develop a pioneering initiative that provides residents, developers and builders detailed podcast walking tours of significant structures in San Francisco. The podcasts will be part of the popular “ArchCasts” series, the first podcast program developed by an AIA Chapter to help demystify and explain the design process. The San Francisco Chapter also received an additional grant of $4,000 by the American Institute of Architects, California Council (AIACC), a statewide component of AIA. Read more…

3rd-quarter building material sales stalled

A slowdown in Clark County’s home-building industry apparently dampened retail sales during last year’s third quarter.

According to newly released figures from the state Department of Revenue, sales of building materials sold last year through retail stores such as Home Depot and Lowe’s Home Improvement during the three months from July through September totaled $78.13 million.
