School of Architecture to make the exhibition an annual event

BANGALORE: Spreading out their ware for a unique exhibition on Saturday, students of the School of Architecture attached to the R.V. College of Engineering (RVCE) here had the city modelled to their tastes. Joining them were professional architects and the school’s alumni in organising the first ever exhibition.

Plans are afoot to make it an annual event, bigger and much varied in scale next year.

The signs were there for all to see on Saturday as the building models yearned to get real.

Creativity came to the fore. That was only to be expected as the school authorities explained, “Architecture as a profession dwells on the realm of creativity while posing on the platform of reality. The juxtaposition of the virtual and the real, the creative and the functional is a perpetual dialogue, which every architect engages through one’s profession.” From the model of a Metro Rail terminal on Mahatma Gandhi Road to an extension of the Central Library on Cubbon Park, from a Visitors’ Centre based on a beetle’s body at the Bannerghatta National Park to a living room perched atop a cliff, the exhibits told a story of innovation.

Building models with thermocol and paper, pipes and graphic images, the architects had turned visionaries. The exhibition was essentially a forum of interface between practising architects and students.

It also featured a wide range of drawings and models in all facets of architecture.

It had competition entries and thesis works of students. Visitors could see actual studios where students applied their brains to complete their five-year B.Arch. course.

At the School of Architecture, students hone their skills in exploring elementary art to designing complex and multifunctional structures. They also engage in site visits to understand the intricacies of their projects.

School director K.S. Anantha Krishna said that the institution had big plans for holding the exhibition in future.

The event has acted as a bridge, filling the gap between students and professionals. It was an opportunity for all stakeholders, the architects, alumni and students to meet, share and network.
