Interior design: architecture with art for interior design

Romy Guevara, co-owner of Rommy Custom Designs, can give you a beautifully-lit stone patio with lanterns and arched walkways, elegant stone bathrooms and living areas with recreations of the Sistine Chapel, and dining rooms with bars of rich brown wood.

“Our art is architecture and interior together,” said Guevara, 45. “We start in the heart.”

Guevara has been doing interior and exterior design in the Rio Grande Valley for about 10 years; prior to his move here, he worked from Ajijic, Mexico where he did projects on a grand scale in Guadalajara and other parts of Mexico. His works include a jewelry store in Guadalajara, Mexico, and a trompe-l’oeil in the home of TV Azteca actor Fernando Allende in Aspen, Colo. Trompe-l’oeil is an artistic technique in which the images appear real instead of two-dimensional. Read more…

Interior design: Managing space and ‘floating’ furniture

Interior designGentle colors, subtle textures, and warm wood-tones are enough to furnish a large sitting room

A space as large as yours can use a secondary activity center, a desk or a table and chairs for games, say. A piano would be perfect, as designer Eric Schmidt ( www.ericschmidtinteriors.com) proves in the large and gracious living room we show here. The white lacquered baby grand, imposing on its own area rug (a totally white French cow hide), provides visual balance to the central grouping, and also carries forward Schmidt’s palette of gentle, calming colors, toast, white, and cream, with touches of celadon green.

His objective, Schmidt says, was to create a “modernized traditional” look in this elegant old manor house. The original owners had made their fortune in concrete and built the four-story Georgian-style house of the material they revered - except, luckily, for those handsome hardwood floors. Laid “racetrack” style and buffed to a beautiful gleam, the floors fill the space without actually filling it. Read more…

Things have changed over the years. Today, a custom office desk could be the right choice for anyone.

While they do cost a bit more than a regular off the assembly line office desk, if you shop carefully and know what will ideal fit your work space, the investment may not be much more to get a piece of office furniture that perfectly fits your needs.

Furniture design: Virtuoso of the rattan renaissance

furniturePull up a chair – a rattan chair – and let’s talk about furniture and design. But if that rattan chair you’re sitting on is a Kenneth Cobonpue creation, we wouldn’t be talking; we’d be experiencing a truly virtuoso piece of art, a declaration that a chair is, sometimes not just a chair.

Kenneth Cobonpue is an acknowledged furniture design leader, his works acclaimed by international critics, design experts, journalists and industry leaders. He is multi-awarded and head of his own furniture manufacturing company.

Most of all, Cobonpue is a Filipino, a true-blue Cebuano to be exact.

Hollywood superstar Brad Pitt bought one of his masterpieces, then another, and then more, including a bed for son Maddox. Soon after, Warner Brothers asked him to furnish a casino set for the movie Ocean’s Thirteen, currently topping box office charts here and abroad. Read more…

Adirondack furniture makes it affordable to grace any patio with this comfortable style

When it comes to décor, especially outdoors it’s easy to make it classically comfortable with Adirondack furniture. You may be thinking that Adirondack furniture is better suited for a resort on the East coast or a cottage in the woods. But, it now comes in so many shapes, sizes and materials that it is virtually impossible to not find some piece that will compliment your patio or deck.

The Adirondack style has been around since the early 1900’s when the first chair was created by, Thomas Lee for his summer home. He gave the design to his carpenter friend Henry Bunnell, who began making and selling them after he patented the design. Adirondack furniture has graced patios, decks and yards with style and ease ever since. Read more…
