Joy Kacik has had a lifelong love affair with older houses.
They’re lovely to look at, she says, but inevitably come with one of two problems: They cost too much to repair and maintain or, even worse, have had their architectural details and charm torn out by previous owners.
When the North Hills native decided to relocate in the early 1990s to the Avery’s Fields development in Cranberry, she found a way around that predicament: She built a new “old” house.

With a mixture of old and new, Pierre-area native Rick Jensen and his wife, Ana, are embarking upon the massive project of converting one of Pierre’s most historic homes into a bed and breakfast.
The home, currently located on East Wynoka Street, served as the governor’s mansion for Gov. Peter Norbeck from 1917-1921, and was completely restored, beginning in 1993, by former owners Dr. Kelly and Cynthia Krizan. (more…)
The Erdmans have three fireplaces in their Mahwah home: One in the dining room, one in the library and one in the great room.
“The only one we’ve ever used is in the great room,” said Diane Erdman.
But that one gets a lot of use once the cooler weather rolls around.
“My husband, Andy, makes a wood fire every Saturday and Sunday,” said Erdman. “He gets it started once we’re in for the day. On Sunday, he likes to hang out and watch his football by the crackling fire. It’s so cozy. He likes to get it really roaring.”
Some might say there’s something primordial about the urge to build a roaring fire. Nowadays, fireplaces serve largely a decorative function in our homes. But we still have a soft spot in our hearts for the hearth, and its connotations of psychological warmth and togetherness.
