Softwood comes in different forms such as chipboards and medium density fibre. The wood is made out of compacted sawdust from tree pulp and it is imported from South Africa, South Korea, China and Malaysia.

IF YOU’VE EVER DAYDREAMED of appearing in your own fairytale, the reality isn’t that far away. You’ll need to supply your own Prince Charming or Sleeping Beauty, but the fantasy location is just a phone call or e-mail away. The five-star Enterkine Country House Hotel at Annbank has long been established as an elegant weekend break destination. However, its latest project takes getting away from it all to a different level.

In the mature grounds of the hotel, a small wooden structure is tucked away among the trees. From the outside it looks like something from a children’s storybook. The walls slope and the roof curves and you wouldn’t be terribly surprised if it grew legs and upped and walked away because you were staring at it. It’s quirky, cute and unique.

I truly think I have one of the best jobs around because I have a licence to shop – spending someone else’s money – all in the interest of my job as showhouse co-ordinator with housebuilder Barratt Newcastle.

To do this job you have to have a natural flair for interior design, and experience does help. I’ve been in the business for nine years now – a graduate of the university of hard work and experience – and am learning all the time. (more…)

Over the last decades, designers in India have shown themselves to be a confused lot, if only because they haven’t been to handle international and Indian influences simultaneously.

Where traditional havelis have replaced the low-seating in the baithak with incongruous imported sofas, apartments in cities have attempted to play the ethnic card with ludicrous results.

India’s great tradition in crafts was never intended for urban homes, and though a few designers have been able to carry it off with panache – Romi Chopra, for instance – most times the interface between cultures simply ended up in a mess. (more…)
