The country gained an opera house, and lost a remarkable champion of urbanity, Jane Jacobs. And though tract housing and big boxes continue to bust out across the nation, architecture located in the places in between was noticed most of all by the prestigious Governor-General’s Medals in Architecture. Architect-turned-interior design consultant Angelena Chan was intrigued with the idea of “growing herbs in the backyard” proposed by celebrity chef Cheong Liew.

The kitchen concept was meant for all the 188 condominium units of the two, 25-storey Zehn tower blocks in Bukit Pantai.

“We have to try to translate this idea into reality by using the yard as a herb garden,” says Chan.

The director of Index Design Pte Ltd based in Singapore, Chan, was trained as an architect and practised for three years in SAA Singapore before venturing out on her own as an interior designer. She did a few projects for CapitaLand Financial Ltd prior to being engaged for the Zehn project in Kuala Lumpur. (more…)

The widening net of world trade appeared to be the reason the 45th Salone Internazionale del Mobile, an international furniture fair held in the outskirts of Milan, hosted a near-record 2,500 exhibitors from 37 countries this month. It was a New Age trade caravan, and with it came a hybrid international aesthetic that even the Italians, who were 90 percent of the exhibitors, embraced.

At the new fairgrounds and buildings in Rho-Pero, designed by Massimiliano Fuksas, in showrooms within the city, at private parties leading up to opening day, and at off-site events in the grungy Tortona design district during I Saloni, spectators got a clear view of what’s to come in furniture, kitchen and bath design stores this fall.
