The next time British lighting phenomenon Tom Dixon visits Los Angeles, he will be feted at an artist reception inside a special store-within-a-store at Twentieth dedicated to his work. And at the new Limn on La Brea Avenue, shoppers won’t miss the “Private Atelier” sign and red velvet rope guarding access to VIP client rooms upstairs.

Like many Bay Area residents, Point Richmond’s Caroline and Josh Quick lost their jobs in the dot-com bust. Unlike many, the two bounced back quickly, investing their life’s savings of $50,000 in EQ3, a franchise furniture store.

Now, three years later, that San Francisco store is on track to make $4.5 million in revenue in 2006, and the couple held the grand opening Thursday for their second EQ3 store at the Bay Street complex in Emeryville, next to IKEA.

Caroline Quick, 28, and Josh Quick, 31, are succeeding against the odds. They launched their EQ3 franchise store in 2003. At the time, the Bay Area was still staggering from the effects of the 2001 dot-com bust. (more…)

Planter’s Retreat, a 3,320-square-foot prototype home that incorporates rustic architectural ideas with the latest in high-tech convenience, is the 2006 Idea Home sponsored by St. Joe and Southern Living and Progressive Farmer magazines.

It is situated on Benjamin Chaires’ 1830s Verdura Plantation land, along with more than 50 other 3- to 15-acre homesites.

Frank Paris, development manager for St. Joe, says, “it’s all about the ‘new ruralism.’ We understand the folks who will live at White Fence Farms aren’t really going to grow crops and breed cattle; but they will love nature and being near to the land.” (more…)
