Independent Austin architects and designers are making footprints on the cityscape in thoughtful and fiercely original ways.

Drive down a street in Hyde Park lined with bungalows and you’ll probably find a modest jewel of a house tucked behind a tangle of trees.

Who built that? Who lives there? The unfussy lines and calm silhouette say modern, but the tawny limestone and rustic expression are pure Austin. The house is earthy and simple, yet sophisticated. It doesn’t shout, but it grabs your attention. (more…)

A slow tour through artist-craftsman David Ebner’s open living area tempts the visitor to linger on objects of exquisite design and impeccable workmanship touched with natural elements: a console table with sinewy underpinnings, its surface laden with potted orchids, a William Morris wallpaper, a leaded glass window.

His fool-the-eye kitchen blends into one wall, barely recognizable as a work space behind a camouflage of wood cladding, its refrigerator sheathed in Sapele wood, its handles replaced with lengths of bamboo. (more…)

With rising energy prices and a growing demand for eco-friendly construction, more and more people are coming around to round homes.

When Yosh Schulman and his wife, Nili Simhai, decided to find an environmentally friendly option for their new home in Millerton, N.Y., they chose a prefabricated circular home for some of those specific reasons.

“My wife runs an environmental education center, so we wanted a home that made wise use of natural resources,” says Schulman. “Circular homes use fewer building materials. Their footprint’s impact on the environment is minimal. There are heating and cooling benefits, as well.”
