University of Southern Mississippi interior design students can add building a house to their syllabus this semester.
Thirty-four students from the interior design program will install, chalk, hammer, saw, finish, paint, build and clean their way toward their required volunteer hours, all while helping Hurricane Katrina victims through Habitat for Humanity. Students begin construction Feb. 10 on the home that will be built on Annie Christie Street in Hattiesburg.
The collaboration between the program and organization was a coincidence, said assistant professor Claire Hamilton. (more…)
Converting an old barn into a home seemed like a lofty idea to his co-workers, but Junior Baker didn’t listen.
For 30 years, he had the design all figured out even down to the circular driveway where he’d park his pick-up and the stone wall out front.
“It’s just something I always wanted to do,” said Baker, 54. “I had it in my head. There was no looking in magazines or any of that stuff.”
No blueprints or rough sketches – just an idea and a man willing to work to attain it.
