After Hurricane Ivan devastated her home in 2004, Barbara Rankin decided that she needed some help with putting it back together. It was then she heard about a talented local interior designer named Pamela Graham.

Ms Graham helped Ms Rankin not only to redecorate her home, but to completely rethink the design of her dwelling place.

Like all good interior designers, Ms Graham didn’t impose her ideas on Ms Rankin, but first spent a lot of time listening to her and finding out exactly what she wanted. (more…)

The annual designer showcase at Southport Congregational Church, currently in its 12th year, has as its title “Rooms with a View.”

Truth be told, none of the rooms have an actual view, at least not of the outdoors.

Rather, the event, which opens Thursday and continues through Sunday, highlights the creative points of view of 12 professional interior designers.

The view of which organizers speak is a glimpse into the minds of some of the region’s top designers. It provides a taste of how rooms in a home can be transformed, whether the owners choose to design and execute an interior decorating concept themselves or with the help of a professional.

“The idea is to inspire your imagination and provide a chance to see designers’ work. A few careers have been launched through this event. It really, truly is a celebration of the decorative arts,” said Louise Lancaster-Keim, a committee member. (more…)

Some interior designers think of neutrals as comfortable, safe and soothing. Darryl Savage uses them for drop-dead dramatic effect.

“I get tired of color,” he says. “I love white. It’s very crisp. You can always change things up by adding flowers or pillows. Or add a little bit of black for punch.”

A decade ago, Savage’s parents bought a small 1950s rancher on the Severn River to use as a weekend house. They couldn’t have dreamed that when they sold it to their son after his divorce, he would transform the simple structure into a combination art gallery, stage set and rustic lake getaway. (more…)
