Georgie Fordham is one of a growing number of people who believe that good lighting is as important as a colour scheme or upholstery for your home. “We had two London houses professionally lit, and when we moved to the country I was determined to have proper lighting here too, even though the house is very old and I didn’t want to start gouging holes in the walls,” she says. “I’m a real lighting convert and I would urge people, even if they have a small budget for their home, to think about lighting it properly; good lighting can change completely the way you feel about your home.”

One of the least known chapters in design history is the story of antique glass furniture, which seems to have become fashionable in the 18th century, during the reign of Catherine the Great of Russia.
The courts of Europe took notice in the 1780’s when the empress ordered huge glass fixtures and glass-topped tables from her Imperial Glass Works for the Grand Palace at Tsarskoye Selo outside St. Petersburg.
About the same time the Scottish-born architect Charles Cameron designed a dressing room for her there with walls, ceiling, columns and doors all in glass. Pompeian motifs were picked out in blue and gold on glass walls flanked by blue glass columns. All the furniture was made with slabs of blue glass, and the glass ceiling was decorated with Adamesque motifs in blue and gold. This glamorous chamber, destroyed during World War II, was documented in a watercolor from the 1860’s. (more…)

At the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, looks matter, too. But the real focus here is on ideas: about materials and technologies, about what furniture should do, and even about how we should live.
The annual showcase of the best in modern design, which concluded at the end of May, brought more than 500 exhibitors from around the world to New York. They displayed new offerings that will start making their way to stores in the coming months. (more…)
