That snazzy new sofa is about to get more expensive.
Because of rising fuel and other raw-material costs, consumers will likely face higher prices for furniture in the coming months.
They will also see more offerings at the high end of the market, say participants who are convened recently in High Point, N.C., at High Point Market, a twice-yearly meeting of the nation’s home-furniture manufacturers, retailers and designers.
That is because more U.S. companies are abandoning the lower and middle-tier to the likes of Wal-Mart Stores Inc. and Rooms To Go to focus on lucrative luxury customers – and the interior designers they hire.
Manufacturers Laneventure and Bradington-Young both raised most prices this year because of higher foam, spring and metal costs.

Outdoors is going upscale across United States
America is moving out.
We’re creating outdoor spaces with all the comforts of indoors, right down to the area rugs and chandeliers. Thank modern materials for that — and quite possibly, the high cost of housing.
“Americans are looking outdoors and saying, ‘Hey, I have a lot more room than I thought I had,’ ” said P. Allen Smith, a garden designer who has both a TV show and a book titled “P. Allen Smith’s Garden Home.”
Creating a garden room, those homeowners reason, is a lot less expensive than adding on, or pulling up stakes. And with expansive choices and opportunities for customization, “you can get the same level of design detail for the exterior” as you could for the interior, he said. (more…)

The widening net of world trade appeared to be the reason the 45th Salone Internazionale del Mobile, an international furniture fair held in the outskirts of Milan, hosted a near-record 2,500 exhibitors from 37 countries this month. It was a New Age trade caravan, and with it came a hybrid international aesthetic that even the Italians, who were 90 percent of the exhibitors, embraced.
At the new fairgrounds and buildings in Rho-Pero, designed by Massimiliano Fuksas, in showrooms within the city, at private parties leading up to opening day, and at off-site events in the grungy Tortona design district during I Saloni, spectators got a clear view of what’s to come in furniture, kitchen and bath design stores this fall.
