The vacant Battery Building stands to gain new life housing upscale condominiums, offices and a restaurant under a $10.5 million restoration plan for the century-old warehouse in downtown Sioux City.
Roger and Jane Bomgaars, owners of the four-story brick structure at 232 Water St., have formed a partnership with Omaha-based developers Jim and Jane Hamlin to tackle the mixed-use project. The two couples unveiled their plans in a meeting last week with Journal editors and reporters. (more…)
Sarah Paxton and Andy Thornton experienced the problem firsthand. The couple couldn’t buy children’s furniture with a contemporary flair in recent years for their 6-year-old daughter at their LaDifférence store in Richmond. The store just didn’t sell any. “We have a manufacturer’s rep who keptsaying we need to get into this growing sector of the business,” said Paxton, who, along with her husband, Thornton, own the home-furnishings store at 14th and Dock streets. “Having a 6-year-old helped spur Andy along.”
Helping goad the couple were increasing requests from customers, she said. They discovered the options for modern or contemporary kids furniture were limited in the Richmond area. (more…)

Bill Bongaerts, the president of the furniture manufacturer in Winston-Salem, often asks warehouse workers what they think of a chair.
“That’s how you come up with a product that goes on the market,” he said.
Linnea Johnson, a graphic designer for the company, said that whenever a new chair is developed everyone in the office sits in it and gives an opinion. (more…)
