Friedmutter Group Architectural & Interior Design Studios took home four awards from the American Gaming Association’s G2E Institute event Wednesday, April 11, for its architectural and interior design work on Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa.

The company was honored during the 2007 Casino Design Awards Presentation and garnered the 2007 Architectural Design Company of the Year for a Casino/Resort award; the Best Interior Design for a Casino/Resort – Retail Facility, Restaurant, Nightclub or Spa award for its work on T-Bones Chophouse at Red Rock Resort; the Best Architectural Design for a Casino/Resort over $200 million award and the Best Interior Design for a Casino/Resort award. The vacant Battery Building stands to gain new life housing upscale condominiums, offices and a restaurant under a $10.5 million restoration plan for the century-old warehouse in downtown Sioux City.

Roger and Jane Bomgaars, owners of the four-story brick structure at 232 Water St., have formed a partnership with Omaha-based developers Jim and Jane Hamlin to tackle the mixed-use project. The two couples unveiled their plans in a meeting last week with Journal editors and reporters. (more…)

Just when you think you’ve had a pretty good look at the office of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects, it shape-shifts. The pivoting walls in the conference room, you realize, are set at completely different angles than they were a few hours earlier. The huge white panel in the stairwell has suddenly been etched with a new abstraction of shadows. Dozens of spiky blond architectural models migrate from one plane to another over the course of the day. And that skylight–that wasn’t open before, was it? Even the staff itself scatters and shuffles. In fact, everything about this Seattle office is a work in progress, from the zealous use of raw materials to the firm’s unique collaborative philosophy. home designWhile many people gravitate to a particular condominium development because of its exterior architecture or fabulous location, it is the interior design that should really be the focus.

It’s true that in this era, with the allure of hot neighborhoods running high, that is tough to do. It’s a lot more fun to daydream about socializing in the wine bar across the street or luxuriating in the spa downstairs.

But if a person is really serious about condo living, she will think much more about her actual living space than what shops, restaurants and galleries are down the street.

Because there is immense truth to the cliché that home is where the heart is, interior designers focus their work on the abode itself. Yes, the neighborhood around the home — whether single-family or condo — is important and helps drive interior design. But ultimately, the living space is what residents will really bond with for years to come. (more…)

Most people shudder at the thought of the harvest gold appliances and avocado green shag carpet that characterized the homes of the 1970s, but restaurateur David Gingrass, who owns the acclaimed Hawthorne Lane in San Francisco, fell in love with a 1975 Napa ranch-style home.

He completed much of the renovation work himself, eventually turning it into a comfortable home where he could entertain, despite its having only 1,500 square feet.

His kitchen, of course, was of primary importance to him, and several of his ideas would work in any small home. One is the continuous upper cabinet line that doesn’t waver when it passes over the sink. (more…)
