Good design can soothe you, energize you or just make you want to linger.
Flowers can do the same.
So it’s appropriate that the two are being combined for Orchid Mania, the annual orchid show that opens today at Cleveland Botanical Garden. This year’s theme, “At Home with Orchids,” is being carried out by interior designers and floral designers who have created room vignettes incorporating the exotic-looking blooms.
The idea is to introduce visitors to the huge variety of orchids and help them see how effectively the flowers can enhance a living space, said Cynthia Druckenbrod, the garden’s orchid authority and manager of its Eleanor Armstrong Smith Glasshouse. She’s hoping the show will take the anxiety out of orchids, which have a reputation for being finicky but which she insisted can be easy even for beginners to grow.

Joy Kacik has had a lifelong love affair with older houses.
They’re lovely to look at, she says, but inevitably come with one of two problems: They cost too much to repair and maintain or, even worse, have had their architectural details and charm torn out by previous owners.
When the North Hills native decided to relocate in the early 1990s to the Avery’s Fields development in Cranberry, she found a way around that predicament: She built a new “old” house.
