AT the soon-to-open Royal/T showroom for contemporary Japanese art and design in Culver City, a cafe will be staffed by waitresses in uniforms inspired by manga cartoons. The next time British lighting phenomenon Tom Dixon visits Los Angeles, he will be feted at an artist reception inside a special store-within-a-store at Twentieth dedicated to his work. And at the new Limn on La Brea Avenue, shoppers won’t miss the “Private Atelier” sign and red velvet rope guarding access to VIP client rooms upstairs.

Friedmutter Group Architectural & Interior Design Studios took home four awards from the American Gaming Association’s G2E Institute event Wednesday, April 11, for its architectural and interior design work on Red Rock Casino, Resort and Spa.
The company was honored during the 2007 Casino Design Awards Presentation and garnered the 2007 Architectural Design Company of the Year for a Casino/Resort award; the Best Interior Design for a Casino/Resort – Retail Facility, Restaurant, Nightclub or Spa award for its work on T-Bones Chophouse at Red Rock Resort; the Best Architectural Design for a Casino/Resort over $200 million award and the Best Interior Design for a Casino/Resort award. Good design is being put to a new test as the necessity of attending to the human impact on the environment grows. Yet design competitions by and large have not risen to the task of creating new evaluation standards. The IIDA/Metropolis Smart Environments Awards is filling that gap by recognizing interiors that are not only healthy and sustainable but also good looking and user-friendly. Asking the question “Is your interior intelligent?” the competition is now accepting entries. In its second year, the competition challenges designers to integrate design excellence, human well-being, and sustainability. (more…)
