After shopping at different stores, all that the 43-year-old San Francisco resident could find was furniture made with a “5-feet-10-inch man in mind.” Long, who is 5-feet-six, ended up doing a lot of improvising, buying bookcases from Crate & Barrel and inheriting a reddish gold wood desk from the last office tenant.
“Everything is too masculine, edgy, too modern, and heavy on the metal,” said Long, who runs a management consulting business.

Two home furnishings trade shows here are combining into a new event called Meuble Paris, which will debut in January 2008.
Operators of the Maison & Objet and Planete Meuble Paris shows here said in a press release that they have acquired rival event Salon du Meuble (the Paris Furniture Show). Financial details weren’t disclosed.
The new Meuble Paris show will take place Jan. 24-28 in the Paris Le Bourget exhibition center, which had been the site of the Planete event. Meuble Paris will overlap with Maison & Objet, the decorative home products trade show set for Jan. 25-29 in the Paris-Nord Villepinte exhibition center. Shuttle buses will carry visitors between the shows. (more…)
Nicole and her husband, Walt Watson, are members of an elite and vanishing breed in America they’re craftsmen. Walt is a third-generation metal-smith who makes custom furniture, gates, or anything you can think of. Nicole has been sewing for 20 or more years, and calls her grandmother her biggest inspiration, although her clothing line doesn’t exactly conjure visions of blue-haired Bingo players. While the pair has done well to invent a niche for themselves, they worry about the loss of their craft to factory-designed clothes and metal.
“In this country, I think we’ve lost our edge,” Nicole said from behind her sewing machine. “Our craftspeople are fading away, and I think it’s really important that we have these skills. It’s important that young people find a way to do these things.” (more…)
