Riva Klein loves it when hotels redecorate, but her thrill has nothing to do with vacations. It involves her West Hollywood house.
A regular shopper at Hotel Surplus Outlet in Van Nuys, Klein, 42, knows what savvy decorators, property stagers and set designers try to keep secret: that a hotel renovation means truckloads of used but often ultra-chic furniture are headed for liquidation.
“I really love a bargain,” Klein said upon discovering a slightly damaged watermelon-colored sleeper sofa for $200 in the outlet’s 15,000-square-foot showroom.

The vacant Battery Building stands to gain new life housing upscale condominiums, offices and a restaurant under a $10.5 million restoration plan for the century-old warehouse in downtown Sioux City.
Roger and Jane Bomgaars, owners of the four-story brick structure at 232 Water St., have formed a partnership with Omaha-based developers Jim and Jane Hamlin to tackle the mixed-use project. The two couples unveiled their plans in a meeting last week with Journal editors and reporters. (more…)

Minutes before on Sunday, a long black limousine brought the extended family of 12 back to 4132 N. Spruce Ave. in Kansas City, North. They stepped out and could see a wildly cheering crowd estimated by one program official at 4,000 or more. But the show’s tour bus blocked the view of the nearly 5,000-square-foot house that replaced the approximately 900-square-foot one in a week’s time. (more…)
